Geoff Merrill Wines

Geoff Merrill Wines is a suburban oasis, almost secretly nestled amid 4 acres of vineyards and landscaped gardens in Woodcroft. This venue has an elegant charm reminiscent of a Tuscan villa, with beautiful stone buildings and lush expansive lawns.

As you enter the property, take in the sweeping lawns, sloping vines and picturesque dam, home to a friendly gaggle of geese that call the Mount Hurtle winery home.

Some of the winery buildings date back to 1897, when the property was acquired by Welshman Mostyn Owen. He planted 150 acres of vines, and operated the winery under the name ‘Mount Hurtle Winery’, which has since been given a heritage listing due to its use of gravity to feed wine throughout the cellars – very innovative for its time!

Geoff Merrill purchased the beautiful but desperately in-need-of-love winery in 1985, and along with a devoted team of helpers, spent two years restoring the heritage Mt Hurtle property to its former glory and creating the inviting garden landscape that exists today.

The sloping lawns are ideally placed between the Cabernet Sauvignon vines and lake, setting the scene for a beautiful garden ceremony (complete with geese of course!).

Framed by stone and covered by the impressive Japanese wisteria and creeping vines, the terrace wrapping the cellar door provides shade during the summer and a kaleidoscope of colour in Autumn, making it another stunning location for your ceremony or pre-dinner drinks.

Overlooking the barrel hall, the cellar door itself is a charming space. Setting the mood with timber beams and high ceilings, it can comfortably seat up to 60 guests for a formal seated reception with room for dancing.

There are almost endless opportunities for photos at Geoff Merrill Wines, from the historic stone on the original buildings, to the pretty florals throughout the property. There’s even a little tin shed covered in bright pink bougainvillea! Another quirky location is the rondavel (from the Afrikaans word for hut). This unique glass-covered rotunda can also be used for photos, or as a perfect bridal retreat.

As part of your booking, wines are provided by Geoff Merrill Wines, however you have the option to select your own beers. And for the catering? They’re super flexible too, and have a list of recommended catering suppliers, who have access to a full kitchen space on the day.

Can you imagine a wedding venue conveniently located just 35 minutes from Adelaide, but with so much charm and privacy, it feels like a world away? You’re not dreaming. The magic of Geoff Merrill Wines is that it’s all right on your doorstep.
