About

Nestled in the heart of the Fleurieu Peninsula, Joe’s at Sabella is a unique building set up in the former McLaren Vale Congregational Church. Built in 1860 using locally sourced sandstone and slate, the gothic-style church was the first of its kind in the region and stands on the same site as the community’s first service held in 1840. This historic beauty offers a remarkable setting for intimate elopements or larger wedding celebrations.

As you step through the original arched doorway and up the slate steps, you’re greeted by the soaring roofline and stunning panelled timber ceiling with dramatic curved beams. The warm, inviting space, with its refinished timber floors and intricate roof supports, is flooded with natural light from the original stain glass  windows, making it perfect for formal receptions or cocktail-style events.

Outside, the courtyard is a hidden gem, with a huge gum tree providing shade and a charming slate-paved platform under a pergola—ideal for relaxed lounge setups or an acoustic performance. With stunning natural locations nearby, such as beaches and parks, why not host your ceremony in one of these scenic spots and then bring your guests to Joe’s at Sabella for pre-dinner drinks?

Step into Joe’s at Sabella, where every guest is treated like an old friend. With deep Italian roots, Joe’s at Sabella is all about making every interaction—from your morning coffee to a full-blown celebration feel like a memorable family affair. They’re dedicated to creating an experience that’s as warm and inviting as an Italian home.

Their food is locally sourced, their staff are from the neighbourhood, and their wines come from vineyards just up the road. Whether you’re hosting an event or sharing a meal, their service is inspired by the old-country traditions, ensuring every detail is infused with passion and care.

At Joe’s, they celebrate elevated Italian family table cuisine. Every sauce, pasta, and dough is made in-house, and they proudly support local farmers, artisans, and small producers. They only use imported Italian cheeses where tradition demands, and everything else comes from no further than a 20km radius.

Whether you’re saying “I do”, enjoying a leisurely meal with family and friends, or hosting a vibrant celebration, their promise is to make your special occasion unforgettable. From the church’s breathtaking historic setting to Joe’s warm, family-focused atmosphere, this venue offers the perfect blend of charm, history, and exceptional Italian hospitality.
